This model law requires an individual who owns or possesses a firearm to report the loss or theft of his/her firearm to law enforcement within 48 hours before he/she knew or reasonably should have known that it was missing. The law also requires a person who had a firearm lost or stolen during the five years prior to the enactment of the law to report the loss to law enforcement within 60 days. This model was written specifically for local governments in California.
