Local governments are increasingly expanding their mission to include improving and safeguarding workers' rights. Despite limitations set by preemptive state and federal policies, localities have considerable space to maneuver and protect workers' rights. Strategies include: workplace safety and health ordinances, anti-wage theft ordinances, and ordinances requiring education and outreach about workers' rights. Local leaders should also consider establishing an agency or unit within local government focused exclusively on worker issues. This creates a one-stop point of contact for workers and advocates and ensures city or county staff develop relationships and specialized expertise about issues and laws affecting workers.
