Taking the High Road to Cleaner Air for Kids and Communities

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2022
Level School Board, School District
State(s) All States
Policy Areas Children & Families, Environment & Natural Resources
School Districts and local governments present a key opportunity to address environmental injustice and climate change due to the size and significance of the fleets they operate (school buses, transit buses, garbage trucks, etc.) The transition to electric vehicles is urgent and necessary, but it is disrupting the industry and opening the door to new manufacturers like Tesla with a track record of anti-union behavior. Local governments have an important role in encouraging a high road for workers and communities throughout the transportation supply chain by accounting for job quality and inclusion when awarding purchase contracts or grants-and holding companies accountable to their commitments.
