The City of Alexandria addressed the need to enhance business visibility and prioritize outdoor activity over vehicular parking by launching a commercial parklet pilot program in February 2020. This initiative, which included pedestrianizing two blocks of King Street, gained strong stakeholder support and was extended during COVID-19 restrictions. After gathering feedback and making adjustments, the City Council adopted the program permanently, transforming public spaces into pedestrian-friendly areas that promote local businesses and public health. The success highlights a people-centered approach to urban planning and the value of reclaiming the curb for community use.
