Safer Than You Think! Revising the Transit Safety Narrative

Type Policy Brief or Report

Policy Areas Public Safety, Transportation & Mobility
Public transportation is far safer than driving, yet it is often perceived as dangerous, contributing to reduced ridership and resistance to service expansions. To change this narrative, cities should better measure and communicate transit's safety benefits, emphasizing its role in reducing traffic fatalities and improving community security. Transit-oriented neighborhoods have significantly lower crash and crime rates, and public transit investments help reduce high-risk driving, foster community cohesion, and expand economic opportunities for vulnerable populations. By addressing misconceptions and enhancing safety strategies, cities can unlock the benefits of safer, healthier, and more connected communities.
