SLDS Technical Brief: Data Stewardship: Managing Personally Identifiable Information in Electronic Student Education Records

School districts must safeguard electronic student education records that contain personally identifiable information (PII) in alignment with privacy and data protection programs based on Fair Information Practices and FERPA regulations. A Governance Committee should be established to oversee the development and implementation of educational data management policies, privacy laws, and data security standards. Regular audits and accountability measures should also be implemented to ensure all students are protected.
