Evidence shows that young people achieve better life outcomes and are less likely to commit future crimes when kept out of juvenile court and detention facilities. This brief highlights case studies in which cities have diverted youth away from the juvenile justice system through alternatives to arrest and prosecution. These reforms have led to fewer arrests of low-risk youth, improved police-youth relations, and more efficient use of officers' time.
