The problem of increasing peak-hour energy demand created by new developments and the underutilization of solar power in parking lots is addressed. Cities or towns should amend their zoning codes to require solar power installations in parking lots of new buildings, specifying a certain electric generating capacity per parking space. This policy relates to urban planning, renewable energy adoption, and environmental sustainability, and it can also support electric vehicle infrastructure. Solar canopies can improve the appearance of parking lots, reduce heat island effects, and provide backup electricity during emergencies. Federal and state subsidies can help offset the costs for developers.
