The U.S Department of Justice recommends that the city of Chicago implement the CeaseFire program, which focuses on changing the behavior of individuals at high risk of being involved in shootings through the use of violence interrupters and outreach workers. The program's strategies are adapted from public health approaches and involve community mobilization, public education, and collaboration with local organizations, police, and clergy. This program evaluation found that the program led to reductions in shootings and killings in most areas, with significant shifts in gang homicide patterns and decreases in crime hot spots.
