Teacher Diversity Matters: A State-by-State Analysis of Teachers of Color

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2011
Level National, School Board, School District, State
State(s) All States
Policy Areas Civil Rights, Education
The makeup of the nation's teacher workforce force has not kept up with the changing demographics in the student population. A review of empirical studies showed that students of color have better academic outcomes if they're taught by teachers of color, making high-quality recruitment programs and alternative certification programs to improve teacher diversity a priority. Educational leaders, especially in urban, high-poverty communities, should allocate resources to improve educational equity for staff and students. The professional experience and satisfaction of teachers of color are also highlighted as a focus for continuous improvement.
