Local governments can save money, reduce pollution, and protect habitat by requiring landscaping to utilize native plant species. This policy memo recommends amending local codes to establish native plant minimums, establish approved species criteria, and streamline permitting processes for projects incorporating native plants. It also includes examples of effective native plant zoning policies that have mitigated the spread of invasive species, improved ecological diversity, and beautified city landscapes.
