Transportation Access and Equity in San Francisco Unified School District: A Route to Success

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2019
Level City or Town

Policy Areas Community Development, Economic Justice, Education, Transportation & Mobility
In 2010, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) approved a General Education Transportation Policy to help facilitate racial diversity within schools and to support equitable access to city-wide schools and programs. This report evaluates the implementation of transportation services to determine how effectively SFUSD was meeting its policy goals. Findings show that SFUSD is broadening access to educational opportunities for students who live in CTIP1 areas (cities with the lowest average test scores) and has improved enrollment by offering transportation to historically underserved schools. The report also offers additional recommendations to spur further equitable outcomes.
