In order to build a strong, progressive populist movement in the United States, it is necessary to strengthen the integrated voter engagement capacity in rural areas and small towns in alignment with progressive organizing efforts in metropolitan areas. This report shares key data on voting trends in rural areas and features case studies highlighting five major insights from the past election cycle that are critical in preparing for future elections: the rural and small-town vote will be critical in electing a new President and Senate majority; down-ballot play a key role in shaping statewide elections; race and immigration are key factors in bridging the rural-urban divide; progressive populist policies are widely popular in rural and small-town America; and campaigns need to invest in relational field programs to rebuild trust in rural communities.
