California AB 800 - Work Experience Education

Type Act or Session Law
Year 2023
Level School District, State
State(s) California
Policy Areas Civil Rights, Economic Justice, Education
School districts must ensure students graduate with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate in society post-graduation. This includes building awareness of workers' rights so they can advocate for themselves in the workplace. In California, the state passed a law making this a requirement, so local school districts are now providing their students with a comprehensive understanding of undocumented workers' rights, minimum wage laws, overtime pay, tips, breaks, sick leave, wage theft, workplace safety requirements, unions, unemployment insurance, and how to access help if needed. Local school boards across the nation should consider implementing similar standards to safeguard the rights of their students as they enter the workforce.
