Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) are hardware or software systems that can monitor and provide feedback about a home's energy usage and enable advanced control of energy-using systems in a home. HEMS, along with smart technology, present unique opportunities for energy conservation. This report identifies various smart products and their potential for energy savings; outlines existing HEMS programs and policies supporting the development of the smart energy home; describes the barriers to accelerated market adoption of HEMS; and presents strategies to overcome those barriers and develop a regional HEMS market transformation.
