Some states are reinstating a federal pandemic-era policy that provided free school meals to all children, regardless of income. This expansion was in place for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years but was not extended for the 2022-23 school year. Nine states have passed legislation to bring back free school meals for all, with seven making the policy permanent. These states include California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, and Vermont.
