Broken sidewalks have become a significant issue, especially for people with disabilities, following a 2002 court ruling that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to sidewalks. Cities should require property owners to repair broken sidewalks fronting their property before selling it, ensuring compliance with ADA standards and improving walkability. This article outlines how cities can improve public infrastructure and safety by reducing trip-and-fall incidents through these sidewalk repair mandates and assistance programs. The proposed point-of-sale program would gradually but inevitably repair sidewalks as properties are sold, potentially increasing property values and reducing the city's liability for accidents.
