Safer Than You Think! Revising the Transit Safety Narrative

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2024
Level National
State(s) All States
Policy Areas Public Safety, Transportation & Mobility
Public transportation is perceived as dangerous despite being relatively safe, leading to reluctance in its use and support for service expansions. Communities should better measure and communicate transit's overall safety and security impacts, and provide guidance on enhancing transit safety and security. Transit-oriented communities have significantly lower traffic fatality rates, and public transit investments can reduce higher-risk driving, increase community cohesion, and lower overall crime rates.
