Charter schools were originally conceived of by progressive education union leaders as a way to create laboratories of innovation to develop new ideas about how to best educate students. However, they are generally exempt from many important laws and policies by which public neighborhood schools
must abide and can jeopardize the very concept of public education. The privatization of jobs in public school systems leads to loss of democratic control, increased costs, reduced service quality, and loss of middle-class jobs. School districts should consider insourcing or reverse privatization to regain control and improve service quality for their students.
