School districts are struggling to hire and retain highly qualified educators. Grow-your-own (GYO) teacher programs recruit and train teachers from within communities to bring racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity and skills such as bilingualism into schools. These programs are often partnerships between schools, districts, community organizations, and teacher preparation programs. This report provides strategies districts can utilize to design, implement and evaluate programs that build an internal pipeline to a diverse and highly qualified local workforce.
