The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that directs all State Education Agencies (SEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), which includes school districts, to ensure that students experiencing homelessness are not separated from their peers in an educational environment and have the same access to public education and related extracurricular activities. Any student who does not have an adequate and stable home is considered homeless. This memo recommends school boards designate a homeless student liaison, conduct an annual assessment, and ensure budgetary oversight is in place to support all necessary services.
