Despite their importance, voter turnout in school board elections is often low compared to other local elections, thus local governments should increase participation in these elections and communicate with residents about the role school boards play in their communities. This guide outlines many of the important duties of school boards, including hiring district officials, designating district boundaries, approving school budgets, and ensuring appropriate representation for students. National organizations are using school boards to push harmful agendas as schools become a battleground for a modern culture war.
