Most school districts do not have a coherent framework and strategy that lays out how the district and its community partners will work together to support student success. Community schools work to address this disconnect. A community school is a nexus of partnerships connecting a school, the families of students, and the surrounding community. They are distinguished by an integrated focus on academics, youth development, family support, health and social services, and community development. Community schools use partnerships to align school and community resources to produce successful students, strong families, and engaged communities, and help low-income families navigate economic and material hardship.
