Climate change and subsequent extreme weather events threaten the longevity and reliability of public transportation infrastructure. In response, Congress has mandated state and federal agencies perform evaluations of the resilience of transportation assets. The FHWA provides a structured framework for conducting these assessments, guiding agencies through defining objectives, collecting data, evaluating vulnerabilities, and identifying effective adaptation strategies. The guide also includes examples from past assessments that illustrate how agencies can improve integration of climate adaptation into planning and decisions.
