Green Social Housing at Scale: How a Federal Green Social Housing Development Authority Can Build, Repair, and Finance Homes for All

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2024
Level National
State(s) All States
Policy Areas Economic Justice, Environment & Natural Resources, Housing
Housing across the nation is inadequate, unaffordable, and responsible for one-fifth of energy-related carbon pollution. The solution to these housing and climate crises is a massive investment in housing as a public good: by developing a national green social housing agenda. This proposal would establish a Federal Green Social Housing Development Authority to build and preserve affordable, climate-resilient housing. The initiative could generate up to 615,000 jobs annually and provide housing for low-income and marginalized communities leading to both environmental sustainability and economic stability through job creation.
