Electric Vehicle Charging: A Primer for Municipal Leaders

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2022

Policy Areas Energy, Environment & Natural Resources, Transportation & Mobility
The growing demand for, and adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) creates the need for adequate charging infrastructure in cities and towns. To acommodate this in a way that aligns the local interests with user interests, municipalities should ensure that charging stations are strategically located along alternative fuel corridors and work with state DOT offices to secure NEVI program funds, apply for grants, and utilize public assets for EV charging. These efforts align with climate action plans, zoning laws, and equitable access to infrastructure. Local leaders must engage with stakeholders, update zoning laws, and consider incentives to promote EV adoption and ensure fair distribution of charging stations.
