Creating an Affordable Housing Ecosystem

Type Policy Brief or Report
Year 2024
Level City or Town
State(s) Michigan
Policy Areas Community Development, Economic Justice, Housing
Access to affordable housing in urban areas is limited, leading to economic disparities and concentrations of poverty. Communities can enhance economic development and sustainability by distributing affordable housing and job opportunities more equitably. This example from Lansing, MI shows how intentional urban planning improves lives and strengthens communities. The city implemented adaptive reuse projects, subsidized developments, and promoted equitable lending practices to address a shortfall of 20,000 new housing units. These housing initiatives were linked to economic mobility, inclusionary zoning, and revitalization efforts post-COVID.
