Critical updates are needed across the water infrastructure in the United States. The last major national update to water infrastructure occurred after the Clean Water Act was passed in 1972, which focused on wastewater systems, leaving water infrastructure to continue to deteriorate in the coming decades. Across the country, many pipelines have gone unchanged since the 1920s, when the use of lead was common practice. Climate change is putting further strains on the water management systems. Local governments need to address these issues by investing in water infrastructure, making at a center point to address public health.
